About the company

THOR Antiques specializes in Estate Jewelry, Fine Art and Silver. The jewelry covers most eras including Victorian, Edwardian, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro and Mid Century Modern. Items include earrings, necklaces, bracelets, broaches, cufflinks and chains. We also have a very special collection of Mexican silver including some pieces by Sigi Pineda.

Our art collection includes mostly oils ranging from unknown artists to well listed artists. We also have some pencil drawings, pastels, etchings, mosaics and bronzes. We have a sizable collection of sculptures by Susan Hawkins and paintings by Cuban-American artist Mike Rivero.

Our silver collection includes a range of styles and periods. We have frames, bowls, serving pieces, saltcellars, vases, trays, candleholders, tea caddies, inkstands and boxes.

We have a special collection of enamels from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Objects in this collection include compacts, cigarette cases and boxes, jars, vases, bowls, frames, clocks and nudes. We also have some pieces of crystal, glass, porcelain, china, leather, wood and copper. Due to the limited space available in the shop, we carry a very limited amount of furniture; mostly chairs and small tables.

THOR Antiques is owned and operated by E. Thor Carlson. The first retail location is in the beautiful Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach and was opened on March 17, 2004. The space was redesigned with the goal of accentuating the mid century character of the 1950's building. Beautifully designed custom wrought iron security bars were installed with this goal in mind. Mr. Carlson was previously a partner of Hobin, Blunt & Carlson. HBC was located in Larchmont Village in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles.

In August 2005 Mr. Carlson was appointed by the Mayor of the City of Long Beach to the Cultural Heritage Commission for a term of two years. This Commission reviews design of all changes to designated properties, and identifies buildings and neighborhoods with architectural and historical value, recommending designation as City landmarks to the Mayor and City Council and Planning Commission.

Mr. Carlson is active in the Bixby Knolls community. He has been a member of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association's Marketing & Recruitment Committee since March 2004. In December of 2005 he was elected to the Association’s Board of Directors and will also serve as the Association’s representative to the North Long Beach Project Area Committee (North PAC). In January of 2007 he was elected Chair of the Association's Revitalization committee.

In December of 2006 Mr. Carlson was appointed Chairman of the North PAC Public Art Committee. This committee is responsible for advising North PAC and the City of Long Beach on public art selection and placement in the Project Area.
